Shakila, a Project Surveyor in our Commercial team, reflects on her journey from Graduate to RICS Chartered Quantity Surveyor. Here’s what she had to say…
After completing my degree in Commercial Management and Quantity Surveying at UCLAN, I moved to London and worked as an Assistant and Project QS. I gained experience in Residential, Education and Retail and am now part of the Work sector at Core Five.
What was the biggest challenge you faced whilst undertaking your APC and how did you overcome it?
Changes in supervisors prior to working at Core Five affected the continuity of support I received. So, rather than fall behind my professional and personal objectives, I made a strategic move to a company where support was at the centre of its values. Core Five didn’t disappoint. I was given a dedicated supervisor who, along with many others, gave their time and commitment to support me.
What support did you receive during the preparation of your APC?
The support at Core Five was tremendous. My APC Supervisor, Jack James, was amazing. I had regular meetings with him which helped me progress. There is a very supportive culture at Core Five and the words of encouragement helped boost my confidence. I benefited from Q&As and mocks from individuals around the business, workshops from a specialist performance and presentation coach, and group study sessions with peers also sitting their APC.
What advice would you give to others starting out or in the process of undertaking their APC?
Consistent hard work helps, but the right guidance and support from the employer is crucial to get to the finish line. Don’t forget to celebrate the small wins throughout the process, e.g. competency sign-offs.
Is there anything you would do differently if you had to do the process again?
Don’t doubt myself and join Core Five much sooner!
What did you do to celebrate?
My celebrations are still ongoing…..I have had fabulous brunches, dinner and drinks with my friends and I’m also planning a big trip abroad!!
