James initially worked in London for circa 11 years, joining Core Five six months into the firm’s inception prior to relocating to Birmingham in 2018 to help set up the Birmingham office alongside Matt Viall.
James has advised on a multitude of Mixed-use masterplanning, Private Residential, Build To Rent and Commercial projects for Clients including: Almacantar, Berkeley Group, Derwent, European Land, Grainger, Landsec, Stanhope, U+I and X+Why. Working directly with leading architects and engineers, James maintains a focus on the Clients’ objectives whilst delivering financially viable solutions that meet design aspirations.
James has the ability to successfully manage risks throughout a project, communicating, adapting and dealing with challenges posed by the interplay of procurement, sustainability, contractual, logistical and programme issues that arise.
What is your proudest moment or biggest achievement at Core Five?
Whilst it is difficult to pick one particular moment, I am particularly proud of the team we are building in Birmingham, helping deliver some fantastic projects and building long term relationships with Clients and Consultants across the industry. It is also great to see the continual development of the other surveyors across the business, many of whom started as Assistant Surveyors and are now in Chartered, Senior and Associate roles.
What is your favourite holiday place?
Mallorca – the roads are great for cycling!
What piece of advice would you give to somebody starting the industry?
Don’t underestimate the importance of growing your network from the very outset of your career. The construction industry is a relationship led sector so building these early in your career with other colleagues, consultants and clients will bear fruit as you progress. Other important attributes I think are a strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
