How did you get started in the construction industry?
When I left school at 16, I was eager to start my career and started an apprenticeship with Balfour Beatty, replacing gas mains and services. However, after a few years I realised I wanted a job with better long term career prospects. After speaking with a close friend about her experience at university and her placement year at a small consultancy firm in Birmingham, I realised the role of a Quantity Surveyor would suit me. I subsequently completed my degree at Birmingham City University, attaining a First.
What is your favourite project you have been involved in?
The Cat-B refurbishment of 6 Brindley Place has been my favourite project to date as I have been part of the project from the conception stage to final account. Furthermore, it has strengthened our working relationship with the client (X + Why) and we are now working on another project of similar nature with them. The new modern offices are innovative and an enjoyable place to work.
What piece of advice would you give to somebody starting the industry?
Remember that university only gives you the foundation of knowledge, but when you begin working within the industry you will acquire a transferable skillset and attain extensive knowledge of your chosen discipline.
