As an independent Cost Consultant, we understand the importance of being dedicated to the success of the next generation. Andrew joined Core Five shortly after our Birmingham office opened 5 years ago and has been part of its growth ever since. Following his recent promotion to Partner, Andrew shares an insight into his Core Five journey to date…
I began my career as a trainee in 2005, going through university on a day release basis whilst working full-time. A global financial crisis followed soon after, so not exactly Rolex timing.
With the exception of being promoted to Partner, what are you most proud of during your time at Core Five?
Being a part of the successful growth of Core Five’s Birmingham office. I joined the business shortly after the Birmingham office first opened, and whilst we are only part way through that journey it is five years that I can already look back on with a lot of pride. Seeing the calibre of the team we are building, the prestige of some of the projects we are delivering and the huge potential for continued success (we’re just getting started!) is hugely rewarding.
What qualities do you believe are important in order to be an inspiring role model for others?
Consistency. From a personal standpoint, regardless of workload, project issues or personal ones it is important to consistently be the same person professionally to colleagues, Clients and other consultants. The same applies to the quality of work we produce and the professional advice we give – never cutting corners and consistently ensuring the highest quality sets the benchmark for others to follow.
Describe your approach to leading a project team?
I try to be approachable and relatable, and ultimately not to take myself too seriously. I’m fortunate enough to work with a team of ambitious, self-motivated individuals who all have an exceptional work ethic and a drive to be the best at what they do, so I just try to guide that to the right places and create the right opportunities for them.
What advice would you give to your younger self or someone aspiring to be a Partner at Core Five?
Two things. 1) Become technically excellent and learn about how things are built (it is fundamental to everything we do!); the softer skills associated with people management and the knowledge of business management can and will be acquired later. You will only get one opportunity to gain a sound technical grounding, and it will always differentiate you. 2) Never be afraid to ask ‘a stupid question’ or ask for the thoughts or advice of another member of the team. There is always another way of looking at any particular challenge, and as Cost Consultants we are at our absolute best when we share / source the vast amount of knowledge that exists at every single level of the business.
