As an independent Cost Consultant, we understand the importance of being dedicated to the success of the next generation. James started his career in construction as a young Apprentice while studying for his degree. Here’s what he has to say about his career progression at Core Five…
I started as a 17 year old apprentice, straight from school, on ‘day release’ to complete my HNC & degree. The early years very much consisted of ‘hand take-offs’ (which I caught the back-end of) before it really became digitised, dropping off contracts for signing all around London, and doing the bacon sandwich run on Fridays!
With the exception of being promoted to Partner, what are you most proud of during your time at Core Five?
Probably how my team and the business adapted so quickly and well during Covid. It was obviously unprecedented times for everyone, but we had some really complex and challenging projects at key stages which we successfully navigated our way through whilst maintaining a premium service which I’m really proud of.
What qualities do you believe are important in order to be an inspiring role model for others?
The ability to handle pressure, as this instils calmness within the team. Also, being personable, and remaining relatable having been in their shoes.
Describe your approach to leading a project team?
Communication is key. Inevitably, there will be pinch-points and tight deadlines on projects, but through communicating at weekly catch-ups, these can be identified early and managed accordingly by ‘sharing the load / responsibility’ and prioritising. Linking also to communication, being flexible and considerate to people’s needs, well-being and personal circumstances helps create an environment where people enjoy coming in and also builds the team ethos – That is often translated through our outputs and service provided to Clients.
What advice would you give to your younger self or someone aspiring to be a Partner at Core Five?
At Core Five we work on some of the most prestigious projects in London, which can often mean they are also the most complex and challenging – So I would say, embrace the challenges and enjoy those projects as you will feel proud and have a great sense of achievement once completed. And also, you don’t realise how much you’ve learnt from the project until it’s completed. If you enjoy what you do, it will naturally show through and you’ll likely find yourself progressing to the level you aspire to be.
