We took some time to chat with Georgie, one of our recent successful APC candidates, to celebrate and to reflect on her journey to becoming a RICS Chartered Quantity Surveyor. Here’s what she had to say…
I completed a full time quantity surveying degree at University of Reading. I also undertook a summer placement during university where I gained practical experience within the industry and leant about the APC process.
I have been working at Core Five for 2 ½ years where I have had a wide range of experience, particularly within the residential sector, which prepared me well for my APC.
What was the biggest challenge you faced and how did you overcome it?
Finding a balance between work, APC and personal down time is important. It is easy to neglect personal down time, however I found this affected my revision productivity and attention span. To overcome this, I ensured to take regular breaks and to have one day off each weekend.
What support did you receive during the preparation of your APC?
I received a lot of support from colleagues throughout the different stages of the process, including document preparation, Q&As, mocks and general emotional support.
What advice would you give to others starting out or in the process of undertaking their APC?
Planning is key!
Break down your write-up and revision into manageable sections and ensure you cover each with Q&A’s. I also found external Q&A’s / mocks very valuable, as hard as they are to begin with you definitely get used to them. Also, back yourself and try to embrace the process!
What did you do to celebrate?
I enjoyed missed time with friends and family including a trip home to Chester!
What next?
I’m looking forward to progressing my career and excited for what the future holds. I am also very keen to help others through the APC process.
