We took some time to chat with Steven, one of our NextGen specialist Engineering Services team, to celebrate his recent promotion and reflect on his career to date. Here’s what he had to say…
I’m a qualified member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors with over 16 years’ experience within the construction industry. Recently promoted in July 2022, I’m now an Associate within our Engineering Services team based in the London office.
I’m a fully trained MEP Quantity Surveyor, having started my career as an apprentice in Engineering Services. My attention to detail and proactive attitude towards projects has enabled me to help deliver some of the largest schemes in London, Bloomberg, and The Broadway to name a few.
How did you get into the construction industry?
Coming near to completing my studies at college I realised I wanted an immediate start to a career in an industry of permanence and durability. After much research, the built environment was the perfect fit with its multidisciplinary fields, I was sure to find a role to which I could build my career upon. Another major appeal was that whether you are a school leaver, a graduate or someone with experience working in a completely different sector, there are many routes to choose and build a career. I decided on an apprenticeship scheme, meaning a paid job, offering structured training, and a qualification in the field of MEP quantity surveying.
Describe your journey with Core Five to date.
Starting Core Five as a Senior Quantity Surveyor in December 2017, I was particularly drawn to being part of a dedicated Engineering Services team that was looking to grow alongside the overall business and differentiate from its competitors. Since joining I’ve had the chance to work on a variety of complex, high value, engineering services projects, across a range of key market sectors including residential, commercial office, CRE and office fit-out.
Having procured in excess of £150 million of MEP services over the past five years, with another £200+ million to follow within the next 12 months, working at Core Five has given me the opportunity to work on some of the most interesting projects, and best clients within the industry.
Key Clients:
British Land, Crosstree Real Estate, Hiscox, and Northacre
What are you most proud of?
My position at Core Five has also allowed me to develop my role into managing, mentoring and training a team of apprentices, and in turn helping build towards the strongest engineering services team in the industry.
Outside of the QS’ing world, what do you enjoy doing?
I’m an avid West Ham fan and a proud season ticket holder! I also enjoy walking trips away in the UK with my Partner and our pet dog Bella.
