As our Engineering Services team continues to grow, we’d like to introduce our newest recruits; Jack Lofty – Trainee Surveyor and Harry Duncumb, Assistant Surveyor
Jack Lofty, Trainee Surveyor – Jack joins our Engineering Services team as a Trainee Surveyor. We took some time to chat with him to find out a little more about him and why he chose a career in construction.
Over the last two summers, I have enjoyed work experience placements at Core Five where I helped the team on a variety of interesting and exciting projects including; Bankside Yards, Cambridge House, Admiralty Arch, and Wood Wharf. These projects gave me a great introduction into the real-life role of a Quantity Surveyor and what they do on a daily basis. In the summer of 2022, I completed my A levels and have since joined Core Five’s Engineering Services team. I’m currently undertaking a part-time BSc Quantity Surveying degree apprenticeship, offering me a great mix of studying and working which means I gain brilliant on the job experience.
What inspired you to join the construction and property industry?
After living in the Middle East, in places such as Dubai, construction projects are happening everywhere and all the time – they really test the limit of what is possible. This inspired me to get involved with construction and want to be a part of future projects.
What is the most rewarding part of your role at Core Five?
Every team member plays their part in helping bring a project to life!
Harry Duncumb, Assistant Surveyor – Harry has recently joined our Engineering Services team as an Assistant Surveyor, having completed his Apprenticeship with another practice. Find out what he has to say about his journey so far.
I started a five-year apprenticeship with another practice prior to joining Core Five and have now completed my BSc. Quantity Surveying degree with UCEM, which was a distance learning course.
My apprenticeship allowed me to gain real life experience and insight into the industry whilst studying at university which definitely helps understanding the context of the course a lot more!
Now I’m at Core Five, I’m looking forward to working towards my APC and becoming a chartered surveyor whilst working on some of the industry’s most exciting schemes.
What inspired you to join the construction and property industry?
I’ve always been interested in construction, especially as a number of family members work in the industry. However, it was after a school work experience placement where I worked on a large construction project that confirmed I wanted to pursue a career as a QS.
What was the biggest challenge you faced during your apprenticeship and how did you overcome it?
Trying to manage my time with both work and university deadlines was tough at times but I always planned ahead to ensure that I could meet deadlines.
